Screening and Prevention of Breast Cancer

Description

This course discusses modifiable risk factors for breast cancer and approaches to breast cancer risk assessment, including risk assessment tools and models. Breast cancer screening recommendations are described, along with key screening and diagnostic tools. The course also outlines breast cancer risk reduction strategies, such as screening, lifestyle changes, genetic testing, and chemoprevention, as appropriate. A patient case is included.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be better able to:

  • Discuss the use of the following tools for quantifying risk of invasive breast cancer: Gail model, BRCAPRO, Tyrer-Cuzick, and BOADICEA.
  • Examine guideline recommendations for breast cancer screening from the following groups: ASCO, ACS, USPTF, NCCN, and ACOG.
  • Describe risk reduction strategies and challenges, and apply knowledge learned to identify and limit breast cancer risk in patients encountered in clinical practice.
